Frequently Asked Questions
Group facilitators are trained volunteers who lead grief support groups for either our children's or adult's groups. Children's groups usually involve a story or theme that addresses a topic of grieving, followed by expressionistic activities (you need not be artistic). Facilitators who lead adult groups guide conversation among group members.
We ask that facilitators commit to volunteering for one year or one school year (August-May), which includes 2 groups per month from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. You will be assigned a particular group to facilitate each time based on your strengths/interests and our group needs. We have found that having a regular facilitator who is committed to their group fosters a greater sense of trust and belonging among the group.
There are a few steps in becoming a group facilitator. First, you must be at least 18 years or older and have a High School Diploma or GED. Next, complete the following online registration form to express your interest. Upon completing training and a criminal background check, you will begin observing groups with an experienced group facilitator. Lastly, you will be ready to start facilitating groups.
Training is conducted by community health professionals, counselors, and educators who are skilled in teaching others about grief management. The purpose of the training is to teach caring individuals the skills of working with the grieving children, adolescents, and adults in age-appropriate groups. An important first step is for volunteers to examine their own ways of dealing with loss. The skills of empathetic listening and group facilitation are also taught. The training consists of 16 hours of interactive instruction, including opportunities to observe and assist experienced facilitators. All sessions of training must be completed (usually a Saturday and Sunday) in order to facilitate.
To become a facilitator with Journey of Hope, the cost is $50.
For professional development or CEUs, the cost is $100.
Scholarships are also available.
